Our next Mobile Monday Barcelona on May 5, 2008 in collaboration with Forum Nokia covers Mobile Development and will explore the mobile developer’s ecosystem. The session will include speakers from Forum Nokia, the Yahoo! Mobile Developer Platform, and will include presentations from the CEO’s of Device Anywhere (USA) and Mobile Distillery (France) and IDEAN from Finland. The event will be held at Espacio Movistar. Luis Jorge Romero, Director of Standards and Innovation in Telefónica España, will be a keynote speaker together with Pekka Ala-Pietilä, CEO and Co-Founder, Blyk. Coming to Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress? Don’t miss the MobileMonday Peer Awards Barcelona 2008! Sticking with MobileMonday’s recipe for success, the event will cook up a bunch of fresh innovations mixed with honest feedback and a dash of fun. Served with plenty of juicy networking at the NEW Espacio Movistar in Barcelona on Monday February 11 starting at 2:30PM.

The MobileMonday Peer Awards are recognised by the industry as one of THE interesting events in the mobile industry. Last year’s Barcelona Peer Awards event attracted 23 competitors, the MoMo community award went to Mobile Complete, the audience award to Plazes, and the expert jury award to Realeyes 3D. Mr. Pekka Ala-Pietila, former president at Nokia Corporation and currently chief executive officer of Blyk Corporation, a virtual mobile operator in the UK, will be the keynote speaker.

The event concept is pretty similar as last year: every MobileMonday chapter is invited to nominate one startup to the Peer Awards Barcelona 2008. This year, we’ll divide the start-up finalist presentations in two categories: early-stage start-ups (founded in 2007, early-stage financing) and emerging start-ups (founded in 2005 and after, inbetween Series A & B funding). The organizing committee and jury selects the finalists to present at the awards event. Entrance into the running is free! Check the Peer Awards website for details.

There will be three awards in each category: jury, audience, and community (MoMo chapters). The next MobileMonday Barcelona event on December 3 covers Location-Based Services. Since Nokia introduced the Nseries N95 with built in GPS, Location-Based Services are becoming exciting again. Google Maps API and flickr’s geotagged photo function show we’re heading to really interesting services build on the location of the user. Next Monday, we’ll have a closer look on what’s in the labs and coming in this area.

Speakers this time include Fabien Girardin - who will present WikiCity a MIT affiliated project that features innovative ways to understand and communicate the dynamics of the city; Börkur Sigurbjörnsson - who will talk about two research prototypes from Yahoo! Research Berkeley: ZoneTag and TagMaps; Andres Ribera of Spanish startup Hipoqih, a Google Maps mashup that aims to create a mobile social network with GPS geolocation and Ilja Goossens, of yoMedia (Netherlands), who will talk about their video content delivery platform linked to outdoor advertising. Speakers:

Fabien Girardin - Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science and Digital Communication in the Interactive Technologies Group (Department of Informmation and Communication Technologies) at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain.

Fabien is also affiliated with the Senseable City Lab (Department of Urban Studies and Planning) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA. His current investigation explores the integration of ubiquitous technologies in the everyday urban environments. More specifically, he studies the design of location-aware applications that take into account the limitations of technologies. In his talk he will present WikiCity a project that features innovative ways to understand and communicate the dynamics of the city. This work draws implications the design of future location-based services.

Andres Ribera, CEO of Hipoqih (Spain)

hipoqih.com is a web 2.0 project and Google Maps mashup that aims to create a mobile social network with GPS geolocation. Its killer app is “Follow me”. It’s a web-based program that provides the ability to quickly share your position and where you are going. hipoqih.com uses positioning systems like GPS that allows to record geolocated alerts and to receive them in mobile terminals. The hipoqih.com plugins are free and available for PDA with Windows Mobile, Smartphone and PC with Windows XP, but will soon branch out and include Nokia N95, and GNU-Linux. Börkur Sigurbjörnsson, researcher at Yahoo! Research in Barcelona

Börkur’s research areas are Search Technologies and Media Experiences. Börkur received his PhD from the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam in 2006. He will talk about two research prototypes from Yahoo! Research Berkeley: ZoneTag and TagMaps. Zonetag is a tool for uploading photos from moblie phones to Flickr. It can tag the photos with the location in which they were taken and suggest additional tags for the photos. TagMaps is a toolkit to visualize tags geographically on a map. I will present a prototype where TagsMaps are used to geographically browse ZoneTag photos, and other geotagged photos.

Ilja Goossens, co-Founder yoMedia (Netherlands)

yoMedia provides a platform that enables clients and consumers to easily aggregate content and to automatically convert and distribute video, audio and images to multiple platforms with a strong focus on mobile devices. The company’s focus is on how to integrate mobile devices and services into the total media mix that covers platforms like TV, outdoor advertising, internet and of course mobile phones. Ilja worked as a lead Flash Developer and Interaction Designer at Endemol Interactive, where he was responsible for projects like the online game engine for ‘Deal or no Deal’ and the mobile version of ‘Fear Factor’. He combines his creative skills with an entrepreneurial spirit to build innovative and successful products with a focus on upcoming, international markets.

The next MobileMonday Barcelona event on November 5 covers Mobile Web Applications. The last 2 months the action and debate on web & mobile convergence has been intenser than ever. Rudy De Waele from mTrends will do an introduction on this topic. We’ll have a closer look on popular mobile web applications such as WidSets and the recentlly launched Mippin. Prashant Agarwal - VP of Product Management at Refresh Mobile.

Prashant will introduce their new service called Mippin. Mippin is the exciting new way to get your favourite internet content on your mobile phone from Refresh Mobile. Mippin delivers the latest news, blogs, and other web content in the perfect format for your phone - giving you the control to discover and share what you want. Prior to joining Refresh Mobile, Prashant held a number of senior positions with Yahoo! including European Product Manager for Mail and Messenger. He also launched Yahoo!’s first official Series 60 IM application and its official FIFA World Cup 2006 mobile application.

Rudy De Waele - mTrends / co-founder of MobileMonday Barcelona and MobileMonday Madrid
Besides organizing MobileMondays in Barcelona and Madrid, Rudy consults start-ups and established brands on next generation mobile services strategies with dotopen. Rudy has been very active in researching and reporting on web & mobile convergence on his blog mTrends. His Understanding Mobile 2.0 article he wrote for Read/WriteWeb is a reference in capturing the essence of this convergence. mTrends was selected in 2006 among the TOP 20 Fierce Wireless Industry blogs and won the Host of the Year 2006 Award from the Carnival of the Mobilists community. He is also part of the Mobile 2.0 Conference in San Francisco.

Raquel Navarro - Director of the User Centered Interaction Lab at Barcelona Media - Innovation Centre.
Raquel has over 12 years of experience in user studies for ICT design, especially for multi-platform multimedia applications. She has participated in numerous research and knowledge transfer projects at an international scale as an expert in usability and experience optimization methodologies. In the past, Raquel has worked at Apple, HP and Motorola Labs. She has a PhD. in Experimental Psychology. The mission of the Fundació Barcelona Media UPF is to contribute to the improvement in competitiveness on the communication companies, including both technology and content. To this end, Barcelona Media performs research, innovation and training for the industry.
